An immersive journey through space and time visiting the greatest Jazz Diva’s of the 20th Century for children and their families
On tour nationally: 2022
Singer, storyteller and educator, Helen McDonald, brings her new show to stage inviting children 8+ years and their families to join her on a musical odyssey through time to meet icons of the jazz age; Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald and Nina Simone. Time Travelling with the Jazz Queens is a riotously good, fun, multi-sensory, interactive introduction to the history of jazz and particularly, three legends of the stage who came to define it.
With her futuristic space travel chair, Helen transports the audience back to the time when a young Billie Holiday listens to the great Bessie Smith and determines to be a great star, how Ella Fitzgerald graduated from earning dimes on street corners to filling theatres and auditoriums the world over and how discrimination early in the life of Nina Simone forged a life-long commitment to the campaign for civil rights. We learn the origins of Jazz in the African drum and its evolution from slavery as a language of identity and resistance. Throughout the journey and narrative, Helen sings some of their signature standards drawn from the Great American Songbook including ‘Summertime’, ‘Strange Fruit’, ‘I Took the A Train’, ‘My Baby Just Cares’ and ‘I Got Life’.
Directed by Charlie Folorunsho (The Trial, Young Vic; Class Club, Barbican) and accompanied by a live trio featuring Yul Emirali on piano, Paul Zimmerman on drums and Leslee Booth on bass guitar. Children are invited to join in, dress up and become part of the performance in this highly immersive show that sparks young imaginations.
