Helen has been storytelling at the Horniman Museum in London for about 15 years. She has been developing her storytelling by using objects from museums, her travels around the world and the objects and instruments she had acquired from countries like Ghana, Sudan, Colombia, Guyana which she has been to many times with Keith Waithe and The Macusi players. She uses them to tell our human story.
She has told the stories of my ancestors from Anansi stories from Jamaica and Ghana. Telling the stories of the Windrush generation which my Jamaican parents were part of.
Working at the Maritime Museum, Hackney Museum. Storytelling at the Black Cultural Archive. She tells stories from the past to inform our futures we have to go back to understand who we are.
Sankofa is the only way for me. You have to know your history to know who you are, in the here and now.
