Time Travelling with the Jazz Queens

An immersive journey through space and time visiting the greatest Jazz Diva’s of the 20th Century for children and their families

On tour nationally: 2022

Singer, storyteller and educator, Helen McDonald, brings her new show to stage  inviting children 8+ years and their families to join her on a musical odyssey through time to meet icons of the jazz age; Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald and Nina Simone.  Time Travelling with the Jazz Queens is a riotously good, fun, multi-sensory, interactive introduction to the history of jazz and particularly, three legends of the stage who came to define it.

With her futuristic space travel chair, Helen transports the audience back to the time when a young Billie Holiday listens to the great Bessie Smith and determines to be a great star, how Ella Fitzgerald graduated from earning dimes on street corners to filling theatres and auditoriums the world over and how discrimination early in the life of Nina Simone forged a life-long commitment to the campaign for civil rights.  We learn the origins of Jazz in the African drum and its evolution from slavery as a language of identity and resistance. Throughout the journey and narrative, Helen sings some of their signature standards drawn from the Great American Songbook including ‘Summertime’, ‘Strange Fruit’, ‘I Took the A Train’, ‘My Baby Just Cares’ and ‘I Got Life’.

Directed by Charlie Folorunsho (The Trial, Young Vic; Class Club, Barbican) and accompanied by a live trio featuring Yul Emirali on piano, Paul Zimmerman on drums and Leslee Booth on bass guitar.  Children are invited to join in, dress up and become part of the performance in this highly immersive show that sparks young imaginations.

What's the story

Helen introduces herself as a Jazz singer from the future, describing the genre and legendary icons of the jazz age that the audience will meet on their journey back through time.  Helen and members of the audience will travel back through the decades by sitting on the time chair, passport checks and digital resources have failed, and this journey is all about being present and keeping the music live.

Helen introduces the audience to Bessie Smith in character as Billie Holiday, singing ‘Ain’t Nobody’s Business If I Do’, citing Bessie as her inspiration to become a Queen of Jazz.  She narrates Billie’s story throughout by singing the classic jazz hits ‘Summertime’, ‘Strange Fruit’, ‘Good Morning Heartache’, ‘God Bless the Child’, ‘All of Me’ and ‘Them There Eyes’ as children in the audience are encouraged to dress up and join in the role play. The chair begins to whir And the audience suddenly land in the Apollo Theatre where Ella Fitzgerald makes her debut. The children in the audience are invited to join the orchestra, with Helen making call and response prompts to lead ‘It Don’t Mean a Thing If It Ain’t Got That Swing’.

Helen gets back in the time chair which clicks into action against the futuristic soundtrack, way back into the past as she tells the history of jazz and its origins in the African drum, born out of slavery as a language of heritage and resistance.  Helen takes on the persona of Nina Simone and narrates Nina’s story with the band referencing many of her best known hits by playing intro and chorus of ‘Love Me, Leave Me’, ‘My Baby Just Cares For Me’, ‘I Love You Porgy’, and ‘I Wish I Knew How It Feels to Be Free’.  The audience hears how Nina protested alongside Martin Luther King against segregation and wrote songs celebrating Black identity, singing ‘Feeling Good’ and ‘I Got Life’.  Helen thanks the band.

Time Travelling with the Jazz Queens is a captivating interactive adventure through history, introducing children 8+ years and their families to the greatest female jazz vocalists of the 20th century.   Meet famous band leaders Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie and Louis Armstrong and learn that in spite of adversity, discrimination and segregation, these icons rose to define Black history, civil rights and the future of music as we know it.
